Overview

Missing packs inside cigarette cartons have long troubled cigarette manufacturers. Over the years, various detection devices have been developed, including capacitive, eddy-current, weighing, negative-pressure and photonic types, each with strengths and weaknesses: capacitive and eddy-current types cannot reliably detect missing packs when the carton outer layer contains metal components or hot-stamping; weighing-type pressure sensors fatigue easily or lose linearity after compression; negative-pressure types easily clog with dust or leak air.
Photonic types are relatively reliable, using X-ray attenuation through objects, with no contact with the carton, few parameters to adjust and easy operation, earning wide acceptance among cigarette manufacturers.
Analysis shows the best approach is to inspect finished cartons: once a carton leaves the packaging machine it is fully sealed, so internal packs can no longer fall out, and the next step is case packing, making this the ideal point to check for missing packs.
With the rise of new tobacco products and irregular-shaped cigarettes, existing missing-pack detectors perform poorly on such products. We therefore developed the new vertical-carton missing-pack inspection, delivering precise detection and rejection of missing packs for vertical-pack cigarettes, slim cigarettes, medium cigarettes and standard cigarettes of all carton types.

How It Works

Photonic detection is the most stable and reliable approach: fast, non-contact, using X-ray attenuation. An X-ray detector receives the rays that pass through the carton and measures the size of internal gaps; when a pack is missing, the gap is necessarily larger than in a complete carton, making this the most accurate way to detect missing packs.
Packs inside a carton are arranged either in a 2 by 5 flat layout or a vertical layout; this product precisely inspects and rejects for either arrangement, adapts to multiple packaging specifications, and eliminates missing-pack cartons reaching the market due to missed detection.

Installation

On an elevator installation, when the system detects a missing-pack carton it stops the elevator and issues an audible-visual alarm; the operator removes the defective carton and manually restarts the elevator. On a horizontal conveyor installation, the system automatically rejects the defective carton into a collection bin and issues an audible-visual alarm reminding the operator to empty the bin promptly.
