Missing packs inside cigarette cartons have long troubled cigarette manufacturers, and over the years various detection technologies have been developed to catch them. Each has strengths and weaknesses that matter in daily production.

Capacitive and eddy-current types cannot reliably detect missing packs when the carton outer layer contains metal components or hot-stamping. Weighing-type pressure sensors fatigue easily or lose linearity after compression. Negative-pressure types easily clog with dust or leak air. Photonic types use X-ray attenuation through objects, with no contact with the carton, few parameters to adjust and easy operation, earning wide acceptance among cigarette manufacturers.

Why Inspect Finished Cartons

Once a carton leaves the packaging machine it is fully sealed, so internal packs can no longer fall out, and the next step is case packing. That makes the finished carton the ideal point to check for missing packs. An X-ray detector receives the rays that pass through the carton and measures the size of internal gaps; when a pack is missing, the gap is necessarily larger than in a complete carton, making this the most accurate way to detect missing packs.

A modern vertical-carton missing-pack inspection precisely detects and rejects any carton missing any single pack, or any carton where a single pack is missing five or more cigarettes, for vertical-pack, slim, medium and standard cigarettes of all carton types. It runs at up to 150 cartons per minute with a reject rate of at least 99.99 percent and a false detection rate of no more than 0.01 percent, adapting to both 2 by 5 flat layouts and vertical layouts.
