Overview

Appearance defects in soft-pack film, such as looseness, wrinkles and bubbling, have long been a difficult quality problem for cigarette manufacturers. The loose-pack detectors installed at the forming-wheel exit mainly inspect the film on the two large faces of the pack; due to machine limitations and the high demands of inspection technology, the film on the top, bottom and sides cannot be inspected online, leaving a gap in defect detection for the pack ends and sides.
Responding to cigarette factories' high quality requirements and zero tolerance for defects, we developed and have maturely deployed the soft-pack film appearance online quality inspection system. Using image processing technology with5 ultra-high-speed cameras covering the front, back, top, bottom and sides of the pack, the system provides comprehensive and robust quality control of film appearance.

Main Inspection Capabilities

The system accurately detects and rejects online the following defects.
Loose, bubbled, wrinkled or missing film on the two large faces
Loose, bubbled, wrinkled or reversed label paper on the two large faces
Loose, bubbled, wrinkled or missing film on the pack top
Loose, bubbled, wrinkled or missing film on the pack bottom
Loose, bubbled, wrinkled or missing film on the pack sides
Missing or skewed tax stamps
Missing, skewed or exposed-edge seal labels
Upside-down packs
Missing tear tape
Misaligned tear tape

Key Hardware

The system combines brand-name hardware with proprietary control software.
Ultra-high-speed brand-name industrial cameras that capture images of fast-moving pack surfaces
Internationally renowned image-processing camera chips
Proprietary image-processing control software combined with internationally renowned processing chips, issuing pass or fail judgments and control commands
Brand-name LED illumination for pack surface lighting
Custom high-sensitivity line-shaped laser source that scans pack surfaces and uploads data to the control unit
Brand-name industrial PC running our independently developed monitoring software for parameter setting, data statistics and storage
Internationally renowned fiber-optic sensors that signal pack arrival and position defective packs for accurate rejection

Software Features

The monitoring software provides production-grade statistics and traceability.
Per-shift statistics of defective packs
Defect image storage with more than 20,000 defect image records retained and defect data kept for more than 6 months
Brand registration with more than 30 brand datasets per packaging machine
Real-time online display of inspected packs
Reject signal on detected defects with counted shift rejection and a reject rate of at least 99.99 percent
False detection and reject rate of no more than 0.01 percent
Real-time vision sensor display plus total and rejected pack count displays
Rejected-pack image storage and query
Quick auto-setup that completes system parameter configuration with one click
Real-time system alarm display when defects such as loose packs are detected

Installation

The device consists of 5 cameras installed at two positions on the packaging machine. Cameras 1 and 2 sit at the forming-wheel exit channel, the original loose-pack detection position, inspecting the two large faces. Cameras 3, 4 and 5 sit at the turret, inspecting the bottom, top and sides.
